Here are a few facts that caught my eye.
1. The FDA banned L-Tryptophan (an amino acid nutritional supplement) on March 22, 1990 (was taken off the market in Fall of 1989). It was stated that L-Tryptophan (imported from Japan) causes a rare and deadly flu-like condition (Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome- EMS). Seems like a good reason to take it off the market?
2. Consider the following: "On February 9, 1993, a United States government patent (#5185157) was issued to use L-Tryptophan to treat, and cure EMS, the very same deadly flu-like condition which prompted the FDA to take L-Tryptophan off the market in 1989." (Emphasis mine.)(http://www.whale.to/a/manders.html)
3. Four days after (March 26, 1990) the official banning of L-Tryptophan, a lead article was featured in Newsweek about Prozac, titled: "Prozac: A Breakthrough Drug for Depression." (http://www.amazon.com/Newsweek-PROZAC-BREAKTHROUGH-DEPRESSION-VOLUME/dp/B0055C8T3S)
4. During the time L-Tryptophan was banned, you could still get L-Tryptophan as an animal supplement and in baby food. (http://www.whale.to/a/manders.html) And it was allowed to be sold as a prescription drug.
5. The ban was lifted in 2005 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21702023)
