If you're not a crunchy health person, but want to know how you can help your child with autism, ADHD, depression, or dyspraxia this is the book for you. When I read a book, I like lots of scientific research behind it- and this book has it.
This was one of the first scientific health books I read when I was about 16 and wanted to heal myself. I just recently re-read it, and want to share it with you as I feel it was very beneficial to my health, and was the first book that got me interested in healing the body verses medicating it.
Having worked with hundreds of autistic children, Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride has a compassion and understanding of mental health that few doctors have.
The interesting thing about this book that is different from other mental health books is that Dr. Natasha explains and shows the link between the gut and brain, and how an imbalance in one can cause an imbalance in the other. This was new information to me. I think it's fascinating how what we put into our bodies can actually affect our brain.
The first third of the book explains the gut-brain connection, the second part outlines the diet and protocol she suggests for brain health, and the third part is random chapters that talk about things like toxins, anorexia, and supplements; how all these things affect your body. (If you are like me, you will want to use a highlighter to highlight the best parts.)
There is no simple answer for brain health. It's not just diet, supplements, therapy, environment, toxins or vaccinations. We are each unique and unrepeatable. The thing that works for your friend may not work for you. This book does not hold all the answers, but it's a good start for your own journey of learning and health.
