Hiding in my room,
safe within my womb,
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.
-Paul Simon, from the song I Am a Rock
This song is a good reflection of what depression is like.
Today I am going to share some facts about Zoloft (generic name sertraline). Zoloft is the antidepressant that is most generally prescribed to children because it is called the safest of antidepressants. Antidepressants can be used for many different things other than depression including anxiety, OCD, panic disorder, post-tramatic-stress-disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Occasionally, antidepressants are prescribed for migraine headache sufferers, which is perhaps why people who suffer from migraine headaches feel relief when taking an antidepressant for another condition.
Ok, so let's look at some facts:
Active ingredients: Sertraline hydrochloride (Sertraline hydrochloride is a white crystalline powder that is slightly soluble in water and isopropyl alcohol, and sparingly soluble in ethanol.) http://www.rxlist.com/zoloft-drug.htm
Inactive: D and C yellow 10, disbasic calcium phosphate anhydrous, FD and C blue #2, hydropropyl cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium sterate, microcrystalling cellulose, polyethglene glycol, polysorbate 80, sodium starch glycolate, titcunium dioxide.
I think it would be neat to go through all the ingredients and discuss what they are, what else they are used in, ect., but from the basic research I have done, nothing too interesting has come up for Zoloft. :)
Here are interesting facts that I researched several months ago, but never kept the links from where I found them! So! Take these as a grain of salt for further research.
In (?) Paul Leber, Director of FDA division of Neuropharmacological Drub products noted that granting approval was a “tough decision” since the treatment effect was modest-minimal.
Others critizied Pfizer on poor design of trials (i.e. 40% of participants dropped out) Until 2002 Sertraline was only for 18+.
U.S. Patent for Zoloft expired in 2006. Now generic form is Sertraline. I believe you can get actual Zoloft in Australia still.
Supposedly there is no scientific support for serotonin imbalance. I don't know if I agree with that- I will have to research further.
Zoloft caused deformed fetus in animals though there is no significant research done on humans. I bet that is why pregnant or nursing mothers are cautioned when taking antidepressants.
Zoloft contains the "black box warning" (the most serious warning the FDA can give) meaning that antidepressants can cause suicidal behavior.
These are some really facinating links I came across.
